February 19, 2020

The Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Food Security Policy (FSP) started in July 2013 as a Leader-with-Associate Award project under the Feed the Future (FTF) initiative of the U.S. government to tackle the challenges of food insecurity. After six and a half years, core activities under the FSP Leader Award  ended on January 14, 2020. This Final Technical Report seeks to document major contributions and achievements by the FSP project from 2013 to 2018 under core funded activities and Buy-ins. It gives an overview of activities undertaken by FSP team across the three consortium members (MSU, IFPRI, and University of Pretoria) and other collaborating partners under its five components, which were organized around three themes:

Country-level support for policy change:

Component 1: Field-Level Collaborative Research and Formulation/Analysis of Policy Options

Component 2: Capacity-Building for Policy (Data, Analysis, Advocacy, Formulation, Consultation, Coordination, and Implementation)

Policy system analysis:

Component 3: Global Collaborative Research on Support to the Policy Process and Policy Capacity

Policy-relevant agri-food system research and support to donor policy and strategy:

Component 4: Engagement in Global Policy Debates on Food Security

C4a: Agrifood System Transformation in the Upstream

C4b: Agrifood System Transformation in the Downstream and Implications for Linkages to the Upstream

Component 5: Strategic Analytical Agenda and Support to Donor Policy and Strategy

The Report highlights challenges and lessons learned from implementing activities towards generating research-based evidence, strengthening capacity, and influencing policies across these five components. We hope that the challenges and lessons reflected in this Report will help leaders of current and future policy research projects to better design and implement robust policy research and institutional strengthening programs to achieve greater food and nutritional security for all.
