The history and physiology of bitter pit is described. Methods for control of bitter pit are discussed and the implications for new findings is shared. Application of auxin and abscisic acid were found to suppress bitter pit when applied early in fruit development at a time associated with the loss of xylem function. Auxin helped to maintain vascular function, which may improve calcium availability to fruit cells.
