Early and late sports of three apple varieties (Gala, Fuji, and Cripps Pink [Pink Lady]) were evaluated for their growth rate and maturation. The fruit of early variants grew faster than later lines and reached maturity 14 to 30 days earlier. The difference in growth rates was in evidence at the earliest measurements made just days after full bloom.  The rate of photosynthesis of bourse shoot leaves was not associated with differences in the rate of growth. Candidate genes linked to the shift in development are noted.
