Extension Does...Tourism in Roscommon
May 4, 2026
In 2023, Roscommon County Economic Development Corporation and Michigan State University Extension partnered together to strengthen rural tourism across the county and three communities - Prudenville/Houghton Lake, St. Helen, and Village of Roscommon.
After a series of surprise visits from first-time tourists, a published report compiled their impressions of the towns and the findings were presented to the community. What happened next was incredible. Citizens were inspired to take action and offer what they could to the economic prosperity of their county.
From hunting and fishing to winery and lighthouse tours, and with more freshwater coastline than any other state, MSU Extension’s focus on year-round tourism brings together educators and researchers with municipalities, communities and businesses.
