presentation has brought you by M
expectation and Michigan weed checkoff
program hello everyone my name is
Ricardo Costa I'm a field crops educator
based in Southwest Michigan
I'm as part of the MS extension elite
team and my colleague Dennis Pendleton
and I put together this short
presentation on how to collect with
samples and send that to the lab one
thing I hope you aware by now USA with
groover has a really nice perk the
mission weed program they allow you to
send those with samples to them as your
lab and they gonna cover the cost of
this analysis that is a real amazing so
if anything is going on your field that
you think might be related to nutrient
management or pests diseases fans of
samples of the lab the Michigan wheat
program we cover the cost that is just
amazing and it's really important
because let's say when you're trying to
figure out what your problem is and
you're trying to find out which method
that you're gonna use to control that
problem the first step is try to find
out what's going on they're all try to
be apply a fungicide but the properties
related to nutrient management so just
make sure that you use that to your
favor and the mission of its program is
helping youth dead right now how are we
going to collect the samples we want you
to collect the host plant and you
collect plants they are showing the
items but they are not dead yeah and
also collect samples that they show a
wide range of all progression of the
symptoms so you want to plan so that
you're showing a lot of problems some
sample they're not showing too many
items that's gonna help the lab whenever
they are trying to figure out what's
going on your fear another really
important thing is sand the whole plant
including the roots I also make sure
whenever you're removing that plant from
the soil should do that carefully do not
put them out of the ground one thing I
like to do I like to use a shovel and
and dig around at the plants and remove
that out of the shovel in that case I'm
keeping the whole plant pretty face also
whenever we move in there you're gonna
have a lot of extra soil
should shake that soil really gently and
put that soil in another bag just had a
really nice way to collect soil for a
nematode analysis also sand between five
to ten plants because you want to make
sure they've enough tissue for analysis
put those plants in a dry newspaper
before putting them in a plastic bag
okay write a newspaper and after that
you put them in a plastic bag you also
could collect soil sample that shows
soil from the both good and the bad
areas of the field what do they mean so
a sample from the area to where we see
the films or the earth where the plants
looking pretty good and you should have
at least four to five cups of soil in
those samples or keep the sample in a
cool area before shipping so let's say
you're collecting your samples on a
Wednesday afternoon do not leave the
samples in your truck in your car until
next day so if you know that you cannot
send the samples to the lab right away
bring the samples back to your house
chair garage make sure they're in a cool
place before telling them it's also
really important to take pictures so if
you can take pictures of the symptoms
that's gonna help the lab to see what's
going on
so take pictures of the entirely filled
house if you want even take pictures of
the plants that is really helpful you
can email those pictures to the MSU lab
website at pests ID at MSU dot edu you
also can play those and put that in the
physical sample but if you can save some
money why not just go and email them to
the lab there's a little bit of
paperwork that you're gonna need to fill
out there is a forum that you're gonna
need complete and submit that with your
samples these forms are available at the
Michigan with program website I'm going
to show you how to get there you come
here to the Michigan with program
website there is a tab here where it
talks about farmer perk and here there
is wheat Diagnostics you wanna click and
you're gonna find the form here and
that's the form that needs to be sent
with your samples and really simple
information they're gonna ask some food
history here as well and that's it
Logan's taught me that we've
samples make sure to include your email
or fax number that's how they're gonna
be sent your results back shipping food
the samples in a box do not send
envelopes because they're not gonna work
we prefer you to overnight or use part a
delivered because you wanted to make
sure that the sample they are receiving
is close enough to what you saw in the
field do not ship the samples on a
Friday
the labs closed on the weekends if you
ship on a Friday that's gonna be sitting
somewhere for two three days before they
can take a look I would recommend you
can take your samples in the morning can
go ahead and submit that sample on the
same day and then the next day that
problems gonna be alright in the lab
this sample they can be shipped to the
MSU diagonal service at Michigan State
University at five seven eight Wilson
Road East Lansing if you have any
questions we'll leave how to collect
samples or how to be the sample that was
not answered here in this short
presentation contact the lab at best
idea at msu dot edu you cannot contact
Danny's Marting there's also our senior
with extension Decatur or myself and
you're gonna be glad to help you that is
it thank you very much for watching
