Welcome to the Borlaug Higher Education for Agricultural Research and Development (BHEARD) Program
From 2012-2021, BHEARD supported the long-term training of agricultural researchers at the master’s and doctoral levels, linking scientific and higher education communities in Feed the Future priority countries and the United States. From 2018-2022, the Program prioritized a new programmatic component, institutional strengthening, recognizing that sustainable solutions and novel research require strong local institutions from which individuals are empowered to innovate.

BHEARD Uganda Innovation Scholars Program: Julia's Story
Professor Julia Kigozi is a scientist based out of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at Makerere University, Uganda. This video shares her journey through the BHEARD Program. Professor Julia Kigozi’s innovation emphasized bringing a new technology to the market. She and her team focused on the question, “How might we better meet the needs of food processors working at medium, small and micro enterprises across Uganda?”

BHEARD Innovation Scholars Program: Gorettie's Story
Professor Gorettie Nabanoga is the Principal of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES) at Makerere University, Uganda. This video shares her journey through the BHEARD Program. Principal Nabanoga’s project was distinct: in her role leading the College, her project brought together leadership within CAES to identify an innovative way to address the question, “How might we equip students and faculty in CAES to drive innovation in teaching, research, and beyond the classroom?”

BHEARD Uganda Innovation Scholars Program: Fred's Story
Professor Fred Kabi is a professor and scientist based out of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at Makerere University, Uganda. This video shares his journey through the BHEARD Program. Professor Kabi knew unique opportunities were presenting themselves within the agricultural sector of Uganda with mobile technologies becoming omnipresent. His project tackled the question, “How to help Ugandan smallholder farmers gain access to international Certified Organic markets?”
