Abstract: As the world's fourth most populous nation, with over 280 million people, Indonesia's milk consumption continues to soar. Current government initiatives, such as the nutritious meals program for schools, are further accelerating this demand. However, Indonesia's dairy sector faces a significant challenge: producing enough milk in a hot and humid climate. Smallholder dairy farmers, the backbone of the milk industry, encounter numerous limitations that hinder their ability to increase milk production. While increasing the dairy cattle population through imports could boost national production, this approach poses risks to the environment.  The question remains: how can the nation boost its milk supply while minimizing environmental impacts? Agricultural technology innovation could be vital in meeting growing demand while promoting sustainable practices.

Bio: Dr. Windi Al Zahra is a lecturer at the Faculty of Animal Science at IPB University in Indonesia. She earned her PhD in Animal Production Systems from Wageningen University in the Netherlands. Her research interest primarily focuses on sustainability assessments in dairy systems and manure management. Currently, she is involved in a project on feed ratio development aimed at reducing methane emissions in collaboration with the University of California, Davis, and Michigan State University
