FSG Celebrated Its 50th Anniversary

The Food Security Group (FSG) recently celebrated its 50th anniversary on September 12, 2024, marking five decades of contributions to applied policy research, policy engagement, and equitable partnerships in food security and food systems transformation.

The event featured a keynote lecture by Matin Qaim, Schlegel Professor of Agricultural Economics and Director at the Center for Development Research at the University of Bonn, Germany. Qaim addressed the future of food security research and its potential to drive policy impact over the next decade. Following his keynote, Derek Byerlee, Professor Emeritus at Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service, and Jeffrey Bloem, Research Fellow at the Markets, Trade, and Institutions Unit of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), provided complementary remarks, sharing additional perspectives on the evolving challenges and opportunities in this critical field.

Two panel discussions further enriched the day’s program:

  • The first, moderated by Saweda Liverpool-Tasie, Associate Professor at Michigan State University (MSU), focused on research priorities for impact over the next decade. Panelists included William Masters, Professor at Tufts University; Hope Michelson, Associate Professor at the University of Illinois; Vincenzina Caputo, Professor at MSU; and Ben Belton, Associate Professor at MSU.
  • The second panel, moderated by David Tschirley, Professor at MSU, explored perspectives on equitable partnering and collaboration. This panel featured T.S. Jayne, University Foundation Professor Emeritus at MSU; Ayala Wineman, Assistant Professor at MSU; Madina Guloba, Senior Research Fellow at the Economic Policy Research Center in Kampala, Uganda; and Orachos Napasintuwong, Associate Professor of Agricultural and Resource Economics at Kasetsart University, Bangkok, Thailand (in a recorded interview).
