Decades of fire exclusion have degraded woodlands and savannas throughout the southeastern United States. Robust attempts to restore these ecosystems have traditionally focused on reestablishing foundational tree species, creating open forest structure, and reintroducing fire. While success has been achieved with this approach, restoration remains constrained by silvicultural practices that produce inconsistent results. Here, I present mechanistic evidence examining strategies that can improve forest restoration by reducing functional
redundancy and prescribed fire mortality.
