The application period for 2024 has closed.
The Leadership Advancement Program (LAP) is designed for current and rising leaders in diverse industries of agriculture, natural resources, environment, and manufacturing, as well as individuals involved in community development and federal, state, local and Tribal government.
The LAP is an all-inclusive experience. The $6,000 tuition covers comprehensive educational materials designed and delivered by experts as well as the cost of all meals, lodging, and international travel and airfare. The value of the program for each individual is over three times the cost of tuition. Individuals are responsible for their transportation to and from the sessions in Michigan. As an investment in your professional development, your employer may be willing to assist with all or a portion of your tuition. A limited number of need-based scholarships are available.
Indicators of Candidate Readiness include:
- Demonstrated leadership potential and a track record of exceptional contributions in their respective field(s)
- High level of self-awareness and humility
- Ambitious and passionate about personal and professional growth
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills
- Mid-career professionals with diverse life experiences
- Open-mindedness and natural curiosity
- Desire for systems-level change
- Proven ability to work effectively in a team environment
- Full and unwavering commitment to the program
Application Process
- The Leadership Advancement Program application closed on September 1st, 2023.
- Fully complete the online application form including essay questions and names of references and submit. To review a copy of the application essay questions, please see below.
- Applications are reviewed and individual Zoom interviews are scheduled with invited candidates in September.
- Final selection will be announced in November 2023.

- How did you hear about the GLLA? What inspired you to apply for the LAP?
- What are your expectations for how the LAP may help you achieve your goals personally, professionally, or in your community?
- Describe a time when you were at your personal best in leading others
- Describe a time when you questioned some of your old assumptions in order to embrace new ideas and perspectives.
- In the LAP, we'll be exploring the intersection of agriculture, natural resources, and community development. What is your interest and/or experience in these area(s)?
- Identify a current issue Michigan is facing and briefly describe the importance of addressing this issue from your perspective.
NOTE: Due to limited participant capacity and the need for a diverse composition of participants, not all qualified candidates are chosen. Individuals are encouraged to re-apply in subsequent years.
