HealthScape Lab secured MAPPR grant for studying Issues Impacting Neighborhood Blight

Dr. Fatemeh Saeidi-Rizi has been awarded a prestigious 2024-25 public policy grant by the Institute for Public Policy and Social Research (IPPSR) at Michigan State University. This grant supports her ongoing research and commitment to impactful public policy, advancing initiatives that address key challenges in community health, community resilience, and sustainable development.

Our lab member, Musab Wedyan, recently presented his research titled, "The Role of Park Amenities and Facilities in Shaping Public Perception: A Text Mining Approach," at the Environmental Science and Policy Program (ESPP) Fall Student Research Symposium on October 11, 2024. Musab’s work focused on how specific park amenities and facilities influence public perceptions, using advanced text mining methods to draw valuable insights into community preferences and priorities.

Two members of our lab, Musab Wedyan and Yeh Yu-Chen, participated in the Environmental Design Research Association (EDRA) conference in Portland, Oregon. Under the supervision of Fatemeh Saeidi-Rizi, the head of the lab, they presented their research on urban and environmental design, showcasing two significant papers. Musab Wedyan presented " Evaluating the Impact of Vegetation on Urban and Rural Areas in Michigan." which explores how vegetation influences walkability using advanced machine learning techniques. Yeh Yu-Chen presented " Analysing the Impact of Campus Green Spaces on Student Well-Being: An AI-Assisted Approach." highlighting the role of green spaces in enhancing student well-being through AI-driven analysis

Yu-Chen Yeh, a visiting scholar at our lab, recently presented her research at the 2024 Annual Scholar Showcase at Michigan State University. Her study, centered on the health impacts of university community green spaces, examines the vital role these areas play in enhancing social interaction and mental well-being among students. Yeh's work, crucial amidst rising mental health concerns in academia, utilizes innovative methods to analyze and design healthier university environments. Her findings offer invaluable insights into urban planning and green space design, aiming to foster better social connections and improved health outcomes in academic settings.

 

Our Lab Showcases Innovative Research at CELA Conference

In a bid to contribute to the forefront of landscape architecture research, members from our lab participated in this year's CELA conference, held in St. Louis, Missouri.

Dr. Fatemeh Saeidi-Rizi, our lab head, served as CELA Track Chair.

Two students presented two studies. The first abstract, titled "Reimagining Campus Landscape through Pattern Language: Contribution of User-Generated Content," delved into the innovative use of pattern language to reshape campus landscapes, emphasizing the invaluable insights derived from user-generated content. The second abstract, "Unravelling Walkability's Influence on Health Outcomes in Michigan Using Random Forest Algorithm," presented groundbreaking findings on the correlation between walkability and health outcomes in Michigan, employing advanced methodologies such as the Random Forest Algorithm to dissect complex data sets. The presentations not only underscored the dedication of our lab members to pushing the boundaries of landscape architecture research but also highlighted our commitment to leveraging cutting-edge techniques to address contemporary challenges in the field.
