Saline River: Watershed Buffer Easement Pilot Project (Phase 1)
The Saline River Watershed Buffer Easement Pilot Project – Phase 1 is the first part of a multiphase project designed to reduce phosphorus loading, bank erosion, and sedimentation from agricultural fields through the voluntary purchase of permanent buffer easements along county drains and tributaries within the Saline River Watershed, Washtenaw County, a subwatershed of the River Raisin Watershed, which drains into the Western Lake Erie Basin (WLEB) where harmful algal blooms have occurred. The multi-phase project is identified as a priority in Michigan’s Lake Erie Adaptive Management Plan (AMP), a companion document to the 2018 Michigan Lake Erie Domestic Action Plan (DAP). Phase 1 consists of a buffer inventory, landowner outreach, and potential pilot scale implementation.
