The Michigan Naturalist training hosts blended online and in-person trainings. Pre-class learning materials requires access to the internet, a MSU Guest ID; and the ability to receive regular communication via emails, to watch educational videos, and take the certification exam.
In person outdoor experiences means that participants will need to be prepared for any weather conditions and variable and sometimes rough terrain at their trainings. Walking, hiking and uneven terrain are to be expected. Accommodations for disabilities will be made according to individual need.
Trainings may be held at various locations in your region and may require addtional transporation arrangements.
The MSU Extension Michigan Naturalist Program is helping people support our natural environment.
The MSU Extension Michigan Naturalist Program is available to all persons 16+ who are interested in understanding and conserving the native ecology of the state beginning in their own backyards. Local programs are coordinated by local partner groups throughout Michigan.
Our Focus
The Michigan Naturalist program strives to help people develop an appreciation of the natural world through direct experience with local habitats. Learn techniques for applying science observation skills and harness critical thinking skills to analyze and solve environmental problems. Learn techniques for gathering citizen science data in the field. Students will also learn about Michigan’s unique habitats and the plants and animals that thrive there. They will explore environmental stresses and the system we use to address them.
The Michigan Naturalist program offers an certification based successful completion of online content including passing unit quizzes, and regular attendance to live programs essential natural resource conservation topics.
