2023 English Riding Horse Camp Day 1
Line dancing, horse time and more!
Line dancing, horse time and more!
Aside from having our Green Science Adventure camp during the week, we have specialty camps! This week campers were learning all about horses! From safety, grooming and parts of a horse. Here’s a breakdown into their day!
Safety and senses
Horses are huge animals and if they get startled, you could get hurt. Campers learned safety around the horses, Sedona and Grizz such as making sure if you go around them to keep your hand on them, so you don’t startle the horse. In the video it also talked about different behaviors, why they stomp their feet etc.
Grooming
Here at MSU Tollgate we love our horses and want them to look nice! Did you know there’s multiple brushes to use while grooming a horse? Well, you have a curry comb, stiff brush and a soft brush. All used to get dirt, debris, and grease from our horses.
Yee Haw! Line dance time!!
During our overnight campout with our Stewards and SIT (stewards in training) we learned how to line dance! Christina, their EDU leader taught them the Texas hustle and they had a blast! At the end of the week, they’re going to perform it as their skit.
Tie Dye
It’s a tradition at Tollgate that campers get a shirt they can tie dye and wear on Fridays! Horse Camp joined in on the fun with Green Science and shared the tie dye so well!
Garden Kitchen: cheese and cracker
Snack time! Our campers got a yummy snack of cheese and crackers in the afternoon. They will be able to bring home the recipes that were made at the end of the week!
Horse time
Campers were able to put what they learned and ride the horses today! They did have assistance with guiding Sedona and Grizz from a helper!
Helmet Activity
Everyone was given 1-2 cups, an egg with protective covering to demonstrate what could happen if they were to fall off their horse and hurt their head. Which is why they need to always wear a helmet to avoid any injuries and prevent a concussion. 7/12 eggs survived in this activity!
Parts of a horse
Campers learned about all the different parts of a horse such as their chest, tail, hooves, ears, and more!
And that's a wrap on Day one of Horse Camp!
