This summer, families are invited to enjoy the magic of reading, nature and teen leadership as 4-H Stories in the Garden celebrates its 29th year at the Michigan 4-H Children’s Garden.
A long-standing partnership between the East Lansing Public Library and the Michigan 4-H Children’s Gardens, Stories in the Garden, is designed for participants of all ages.
The program features local teens reading stories aloud throughout the garden. Children and families are encouraged to wander, explore and stop along the way to listen, making each visit a unique blend of storytelling, movement and discovery.
“Stories in the Garden is a great way to engage children’s senses, have breaks for play and exploration, and offer fun story-sharing opportunities for families,” said Gillian Streeter, youth services librarian at the East Lansing Public Library. “The only thing that might slow us down is weather – and we’ve already read through one sun shower, rainbow and all!”
Stories in the Garden provides a service opportunity for teens who want to make story time special for youth participants. Teens interested in serving as volunteer readers are encouraged to email shawthorn@elpl.org.
The program was first conceived by Dr. Norm Lownds, professor emeritus and 4-H Children’s Garden curator from 1997 to 2022. His innovative vision helped the garden to earn numerous awards, including national recognition for Stories in the Garden from the American Library Association.
4-H Stories in the Garden will be held:
• June 17 from 10-11:30 a.m.
• July 15 from 7-8:30 p.m.
• August 5 from 10-11:30 a.m.
