Coaching child care providers to improve nutrition and physical activity

EmailMSU Extension provides free coaching for eligible child care providers with the goal of improving nutrition and physical activity through policy, systems and environmental initiatives.
Through funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program–Education, Michigan State University Extension provides free coaching for eligible child care providers with the goal of improving nutrition and physical activity through policy, systems and environmental (PSE) initiatives. The environment is assessed using the Nutrition and Physical Activity Self-Assessment for Child Care. Coaches provide resources and troubleshoot barriers to create change.
Coaches continue working with a minimum of 30 percent of sites each year that influence additional changes. Over the past two years, over 200 child care providers who provide care for over 1,500 young children received this PSE intervention.
In 50 child care homes, the following policy and environmental changes have occurred and more are in progress:
- 131 nutrition changes
- 98 fruit and vegetable changes
- 37 fruit and vegetable changes
