Michigan State University broke ground on the Detroit Partnership for Food, Learning and Innovation. While construction is not yet complete, MSU has already begun its educational initiative for Michigan’s first urban food and agriculture research center.
Already, MSU Extension educators are putting on programs that address the economic and nutritional challenges of urban communities while the center has a new director, Naim Edwards, meeting with community, city and nonprofit organizational partners.
The center, located in Detroit’s Riverdale neighborhood near Brightmoor, will be the fourth MSU Extension facility in Detroit. It will join 13 research centers located throughout Michigan.
Edwards will be joined by fellow MSU Extension educators and researchers in southeastern Michigan to provide education including soil sampling and pollution cleanup, pest and crop disease management, forestry, innovative growing systems and community food systems development.
