MEMO - URGENT CALL FOR ACTION TO END VIOLENCE IN SOUTH OMO ZONE

A recently released memo from Concerned Scholars for Ethiopia (CSE) is a call for immediate action to end the ongoing crisis in Bodi and Mursi (South Omo Zone), and to investigate reports of human rights violations as soon as possible. Receipt of the current Memo (and previous versions) has been acknowledged by the Ethiopian Ministry of Defense, the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission and several other Ethiopian government institutions.

Next to security and human rights problems found in other parts of the Southern Regional State (SNNPRS), as well as in Beni Shangul-Gumuz, Gambela, Oromiyaa and Amhara, the situation in South Omo is very serious but largely neglected.

As known from numerous reports, the Federal Ethiopian Government currently has many security challenges in the country, but the most appalling events in South Omo, which are linked with government bodies, seem to have been totally banished from discussion and public knowledge. By posting documentation on what is happening on the ground, we wish to support the process of establishing the rule of law that the government so highly desires.

At a time when Ethiopia is being praised for its peace process efforts, we hope that the Government will act swiftly to carry out its obligations to protect its citizens and bring the perpetrators of atrocities to justice.
