Creating inclusive and affirming spaces for LGBTQIA+ youth: Part 2
LGBTQIA+ affirming spaces offer a sense of community and allow young people to experience support up close.
In Part 1 of this Michigan State University Extension article on creating inclusive and affirming spaces for LGBTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, intersex, asexual and additional gender and sexual identities) youth, we discussed that creating an environment that prioritizes youth is essential for the growth and safety of young people. Additionally, it is vital to utilize strengths and safety components that safeguard LGBTQIA+ youth from various risks, including fostering relationships with compassionate adults and cultivating a sense of belonging.
Here are five ways YOU can stand in unity with LGBTQIA+ youth:
- Address LGBTQIA+ youth using the names and pronouns that validate their identities. It is important to become acquainted with the terminology and language that pertains to LGBTQIA+ communities. Proper language use involves recognizing and employing gender-inclusive language while avoiding any expressions that are biased or discriminatory.
- Recognize that young individuals may not feel at ease sharing their identity with you. Numerous LGBTQIA+ youth harbor concerns about the potential adverse reactions that could arise from disclosing this aspect of their lives. Some may have experienced rejection from their families upon coming out, leading to a hesitance to face additional rejection.
- Support LGBTQIA+ youth and advocate for their concerns. By addressing discrimination or bullying, you can contribute to raising awareness and inform others that such language and actions are intolerable.
- Explore research topics and issues related to LGBTQIA+ identities and pose respectful inquiries to enhance understanding. LGBTQIA+ youth should not be expected to bear the burden of explaining their identities to others. It is important to take the initiative to educate oneself on these matters and remain informed.
- Inquire respectfully about LGBTQIA+ identities to enhance comprehension. It is crucial to avoid making assumptions regarding individuals. Upon meeting someone, share your pronouns first. This may make it more comfortable for others to share theirs. Also, never out LGBTQIA+ youth. It is not your job to reveal anyone’s identity. You can help them through the journey, but they get to decide how or if they want to come out.
Through the application of these strategies, 4-H staff and volunteers can collaboratively establish a secure and welcoming atmosphere for LGBTQIA+ youth. This partnership not only enhances mental health and overall well-being, but also enables LGBTQIA+ youth to flourish. Let us dedicate ourselves to cultivating environments in which every young person feels appreciated, respected and supported. United, we can positively impact the lives of LGBTQIA+ youth and contribute to a more inclusive future.
