FCCP participates in the Penn State Climate Solutions Symposium and an ACT-AT partnership stakeholder discussion
FCCP participated in a panel discussion as a part of the Penn State Climate Solutions Symposium and helped facilitate an ACT-AT partnership stakeholder discussion.
At the Penn State Climate Solutions Symposium, the Augmenting Climate Transition across the Atlantic Transect (ACT-AT) project team which includes collaborators from Penn State University, MSU FCCP, Jorge Tadeo University, GMF Nature Based Solutions, National University of Colombia, National University of Jujuy, American Forests, and the Federal University Parana, convened a panel titled “Stakeholder-Driven Insights on Forest Carbon Offsets from the ACT-AT Forests Project” which is an extension-driven project that seeks to inform the implementation of socially responsible, high integrity forest carbon offsets on non-industrial forest lands across an Atlantic seaboard transect.
Following the conclusion of the symposium, the ACT-AT team convened a 2-day workshop with stakeholder discussions to parse through the implications of the project for Pennsylvania landowners. During these discussions, Dr. Chad Papa, FCCP Director, presented “Economic Trade-offs in Timber Products Under Various Carbon Management Strategies for Pennsylvania,” highlighting results from a recent paper published in Forest Policy and Economics, which shows the financial implications of varying management strategies between timber and carbon, followed by a discussion to contextualize those results.
The workshop also featured multiple field tours to Penn State’s Stone Valley Experimental Forest, local landowner properties enrolled in forest resilience cost-share programs, conservation areas for bird habitat, and additional visits to local governmental leaders highlighting how carbon as a management goal can align with other important forest management goals.
This project, led by Penn State University, has been ongoing for 1.5 years using a co-designed approach with stakeholders to inform new carbon mitigation standards and engagement strategies. Led by Dr. Melissa Kreye and Dr. Chris Scott, the project team has now conducted stakeholder discussions across four countries, including Argentina, Colombia, Brazil, and the US.
