Fellowship puts Carlson on trout management stream
Add Summary
Andrew Carlson, a CSIS doctoral student, will be paired with a Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) executive to analyze results from the 2015 Inland Trout Angler Survey with the help of the Janice Lee Fenske Excellence in Fisheries Management Fellowship.
He was awarded the one-year fellowship to complete a project that is both relevant for the MDNR and conducive to his professional development. Carlson will work with Troy Zorn, a research biologist with MDNR on a project focused on understanding the values, perceptions, and behaviors of Michigan trout anglers, and collaborate with MDNR fisheries managers to write a statewide management plan for inland populations of brown trout, brook trout, and rainbow trout. He studies with Bill Taylor, University Distinguished Professor in Global Fisheries Systems.
The fellowship, administered by the MSU Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, was named for Jan Fenske, the first female biologist for the Fisheries Division of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and an MSU graduate. During her 27 years of service, Fenske’s love of the environment compelled her to work for the long-term protection and sustainable use of the state’s aquatic resources.
Carlson is studying effects of climate change, land use alteration, and groundwater withdrawal in riverine ecosystems.
