Learn about Michigan food systems with MI Food Stories online course
MI Food Stories course provides opportunity for Michigan food consumers to learn more about food systems.
Michigan food consumers can now learn more about the stories of the foods they eat and explore their role in Michigan's food system by completing the MI Food Stories online course offered by Michigan State University Extension. This course, developed by MSU Extension community food systems educators, aims to help Michigan food consumers become more knowledgeable about the Michigan food system. Course participants will engage in online activities that explore food production, processing, consumption and distribution in Michigan; share food stories from their communities; and recognize their connectedness to food, agriculture, the environment and the economy.
A food system is the interconnected web of people, places, inputs and policies involved in the production, processing, distribution, consumption and waste management of food. Every food has a unique path through the food system, and every food has a unique story of how it gets from a farm to your plate. Participants in the MI Food Stories course explore each component of the food system and put their knowledge into practice through "Discovering Local Food Connections” activities that encourage them to get to know their food system firsthand by completing food-related tasks in their community.
Participation in this course is free and takes place on MSU's Desire 2 Learn online platform. Participants who successfully complete the course will receive a certificate of completion. Those interested can learn more at the MI Food Stories registration page.
