Sustainability scholar Jianguo "Jack" Liu has been elected to the prestigious Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters, a new honor he received while attending ceremonies to receive the Gunnerus Award in Sustainability Science.
The society was founded in 1760 and is Norway's oldest scientific and scholarly institution. Its membership consists of members elected for life among the country's and the world’s most prominent scholars and scientists. The society's Protector is King Harald V of Norway.
The Gunnerus Award is the society's highest award, given to Liu in 2021 for extraordinary scientific advances in sustainability. The COVID pandemic delayed the award ceremonies until his year.
Liu holds the Rachel Carson Chair in Sustainability, is University Distinguished Professor at Michigan State University and is the founding director of the Center for Systems Integration and Sustainability.
Liu takes a holistic approach to addressing complex human-environmental challenges through systems integration, such as the integration of ecology with social sciences, policy and advanced technologies. He is particularly keen to connect seemingly unconnected issues, for example, telecoupling, divorce and environmental sustainability. His work has been published in journals such as Nature and Science and has been widely covered by the international news media.
“I am very honored to be part of the society that is so committed to global sustainability,” Liu said.
Liu has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Philosophical Society and named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).
