At this year’s graduation ceremony (March 24) Jennifer “Jeno” Rivera, Director of the Institute of Agriculture Technology (IAT), announced that Mr. Marcus Wayne Duck had been selected by IAT students as the recipient of the 2024 Outstanding Faculty Award.
Marcus Duck is an esteemed faculty member, possessing a wealth of knowledge and experience in the field of horticulture. He earned his BS degree in Horticulture from Auburn University and furthered his education with an MS degree in Horticulture from here at Michigan State University. Throughout his career, Marcus has gained diverse industry experience, including retail garden center management, integrated pest management at Walt Disney World, and landscape installation and maintenance at Landscape Services, Inc. in Birmingham, AL.
Since joining MSU’s Department of Horticulture in 2002, Marcus has played a pivotal role in shaping the academic landscape. As the Program Coordinator and Academic Advisor for the IAT Horticulture programs in East Lansing, he guides students pursuing careers in irrigation, arboriculture, public gardens, and landscape industries. Marcus is deeply involved in teaching a range of courses, including Horticulture Career Development, Landscape Maintenance, Landscape & Turfgrass Business Operations, Irrigation Systems for Horticulture, and more. He also oversees internships for both on-campus IAT and BS degree students, ensuring they receive practical, hands-on experience in their chosen field.
Beyond his teaching responsibilities, Marcus serves as the advisor for the Department’s undergraduate Student Horticulture Association and coaches the MSU National Association of Landscape Professionals National Collegiate Landscape Competition Team. His dedication to both education and mentorship has had a profound impact on the success of our students and the broader horticultural community. Marcus exemplifies the excellence and commitment that define our faculty at Michigan State.
