The Michigan State University (MSU) Pesticide Safety Education Program (PSEP) is now offering fee-based Core Review training sessions designed to help pesticide applicators prepare for the pesticide applicator certification exam.

These sessions provide a comprehensive review of the National Core Pesticide Applicator Training Manual and are tailored for both commercial and private applicators seeking certification.

The Core Review sessions are led by the PSEP team and focus on key topics essential for certification success, including pesticide laws and regulations safety and personal protective equipment, environmental protection and risk reduction, pesticide label comprehension, and integrated pest management principles.

In addition to supporting new applicators preparing for the certification exam, these sessions also provide a valuable opportunity for currently certified applicators to maintain their credentials. Participants can earn restricted use pesticide (RUP) recertification credits, with up to four RUP credits available for the Core category (commercial or private).

Sessions are typically 4 hours in length, making them an efficient and convenient way to both prepare for certification and maintain licensure.

An important note is that the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) testing is not offered at these sessions. Pesticide applicators will need to schedule their certification exam separately through the Metro Institute, an approved testing provider by MDARD. All exams are available at the Metro Institute and are computer-based available in person or remotely. To learn more about how to schedule an exam, please visit the PSEP website at "How to Take the Exam.”

These trainings are ideal for organizations, agencies and industry groups interested in hosting customized sessions for their employees, members or clientele. Sessions can be delivered in-person or virtually, depending on the needs of the requesting organization.

This service expands access to high-quality pesticide safety training and helps ensure applicators are well-prepared for certification while promoting safe and responsible pesticide use across Michigan.

Organizations interested in scheduling a Core Review session or learning more about this service are encouraged to contact the MSU PSEP coordinator, Safa Alzohairy, PhD, at safa@msu.edu or 517-353-9903, or Emma Schalchter, PSEP supporting staff, at schlach8@msu.edu.
