MSU students sweep popular vote awards at the Home Builders Association Student Design Challenge
Interior design student teams from MSU’s School of Planning, Design and Construction received first, second and third place awards in the popular vote category at the Home Builders Association (HBA) Student Design Challenge.
On Oct. 1, 2019, interior design student teams from MSU’s School of Planning, Design and Construction received first, second and third place awards in the popular vote category at the Home Builders Association (HBA) Student Design Challenge. One of the student teams also received Honorable Mention from the Judges Panel.
The HBA, in partnership with Humble Design serves individuals, families and veterans emerging from homelessness by transforming their empty house into a warm, welcoming and uplifting home with donated furniture and household goods.
Forty-one (41) professional designers and 48 student designers from six local universities, including MSU, participated in this challenge.
The challenge required the designers from each student team to select two “anchor” items from the Humble Design Inventory and Humble accessories that could be supplemented with personal items, to create 10 x 8 vignettes (or small staged rooms) that reflected the concept of a “Humble Home.”
The participants could design the vignette in the categories that included: Living, Bedroom, Dining, Children’s playrooms, “Man Caves,” Offices, etc.
Participants selected their items on Sept. 24 from the Humble Design warehouse and were given a week to prepare their designs. On the day of the competition, the participants had six hours to create their vignette space.
The winning interior design student team, including Gyuri Jang (senior), Dima Alnajjar and Julia Kassel (juniors), designed a fun children’s playroom.
The team comprised of Megan Emke (senior), Lucia Cibelli and Jiuen Yun (juniors), received second place for their front porch design, and garnered Honorable Mention by the judges.
Third place team made up of Rachel Rantenan (senior), Chloe Jaworski and Sophia Tiglao (juniors) designed a bedroom.
“It was a great experience for the students; working on a tight time frame with minimal to no budget, and learning how to incorporate old, must-use items into a fresh design,” said their competition advisor and Interior Design teaching-specialist Laura Winter. "It was also a great networking event for them!”
