National Apprenticeship Week is a fairly new event that was launched in 2015 by the United States Department of Labor. It coincides with another themed event called National Career Development Month that takes place each November. National Apprenticeship Week is a celebration of the skilled trades’ jobs and career opportunities. It brings together business and industry, educators, the labor force, community partners and potential workers or trainees usually the second full week of November.

Michigan has a lot to offer individuals who wish to work in the skilled trades’ area. As of today, Michigan has 36 events registered for National Apprenticeship Week you can explore. Some of the events being held include the following:

  • The Operating Engineers 324 Construction Career Center in Howell, Michigan, is hosting an open house. This is apparently the largest skilled trades’ training facility in Michigan.
  • Byron Center High School in Byron Center is hosting Apprenticeship Opportunities for Women.
  • Growing Your Own Talent is being hosted by Kirkland Community College in Grayling.
  • What's New in SOLIDWORKS 2019 Event takes place in Frankenmuth, Michigan.

If it does not work to visit these opportunities now, think about exploring them in the future as you determine your career path. You may also wish to check out Michigan 4-H Youth Development as it has a variety of projects and experiences you could explore if you are interested in a job or career in the skilled trades’ workforce. Many of our science and engineering opportunities can build skills while providing exploration of related jobs and careers. Even our entrepreneurship projects could help young people learn how to have their own skilled trades’ business for those who wish to be their own boss. These 4-H experiences can provide networking and connections for job shadowing, internships or future apprenticeships to help you make an informed decision about your future.

What will you do to engage in or support National Apprenticeship Week? The possibilities are endless!

Michigan State University Extension and Michigan 4-H Youth Development help to prepare young people for successful futures.
