Portales named Lyman Briggs College Research Fellow

Natalia Portales, a CSIS undergraduate researcher, gains support for her work on the arctic telecoupling project.

Natalia Portales, a CSIS undergraduate researcher, will have her work on a National Science Foundation-funded project in the Arctic supported by a Lyman Briggs Fellowship.

Her work, “Assessing the Gaps in Arctic Marine Mammal Datasets and Organizing Data for Usability,” will be part of the  $1.54 million NSF project exploring consequences of climate change, natural resource development, shipping, and tourism in the Arctic. Portales is mentored by Center for Systems Integration and Sustainability director Jianguo "Jack" Liu.

The award will support up to $2,000 of project work and she'll be presenting her results at an MSU forum or in at a national venue.

Portales is a third year student studying environmental biology and zoology with a minor in Spanish.
