For those outside of the field, studying one genus of fishes seems like a very narrow discipline. But, for the organizers of the seven international charr symposiums, there was not enough collaboration and information shared even amongst these charr scientists. So, they decided to hold symposiums every three years to keep apprised of each other’s work. The geneticists can learn from the management biologists, the stock assessment modeler can learn from the morphologist.
This year, the 7th International Charr Symposium was held at the edge of the world – on Sakhalinsk Island, in Russia, just north of Japan. This symposium, as those before, was an opportunity to present research, discuss methods, and network with charr biologists. It is a smaller meeting than, for instance, AFS, but it’s also more personal and open. You get to know everyone at the meeting and they get to know you! That’s particularly helpful for research projects, like Kelsey Schlee’s, which was presented to seek the recommendations from THE charr experts – she just had to go all the way around the world to get!
