Saying “goodbye” in your job interview
A last impression is just as important as the first impression.
You had an interview for a job and have answered all the questions. Michigan State University Extension 4-H Youth Development has suggestions on how to make the closure of the interview successful so you can leave on a positive note.
Most interviewers will ask if you have any questions before the end of the intereview. It is important to ask at least one question to demonstrate your engagement in the process.
First, it is important to make sure you ask questions about the position and the next steps that will be taking place. Additionally, asking questions about the organization, steps for advancement and programs that the organization is currently involved in shows an interest in what the organization does and that you have done your research to learn more. Some good questions to ask are:
- When can I expect to hear back from you?
- What do you enjoy most about your work here?
- If I get this position, who would I be reporting to?
- Who would I be working with in this position?
- Are there opportunities to advance?
- What types of training and development are available in this position?
Once finished, follow the cues of the interviewer to know that the interview is, in fact, over. As the interview is ending, stand up and thank each interviewer. Use a proper business handshake, make eye contact and smile. Tell each interviewer that you appreciate the opportunity to meet with them and look forward to the next steps.
Remain professional even though the interview is over. This means staying polite to everyone you come in contact with, carrying yourself well to your vehicle, and leaving the parking lot in a calm and respectful way.
MSU Extension has many articles and trainings to help you prepare for and be successful in your job interviews. A good last impression is just as important as a good first impression. With a plan in mind, your interview can end just as well as it starts.
