The importance of multilingualism
Unlock your skills to learn another language and gain tools that will give you a broader, more global perspective of the world around you.
The educational vision of the state of Michigan is a future in which all students develop and maintain proficiency in English and at least one additional language. The Michigan Seal of Biliteracy (MI-SoBL) has been created to recognize high school graduates who exhibit proficiency in English and at least one additional world language via several approved pathways.
This goal is reflected in the state's academic standards, which promote new language learning as an integral part of academic development. The standards suggest that students should achieve certain competencies related to learning a second language.
Why is this an important fact? When working on your leadership skills and setting a roadmap to success, one should include learning a new language as a goal, in addition to your native language.
We live in a deeply globalized world that demands young people with an open mind, intercultural skills, and international perspectives. Learning another language broadens your view of the world, improves your communication skills, and helps you understand and connect with other cultures. In addition, it strengthens your professional development!
Why learn another language?
Beyond being able to order your favorite coffee in another country or understand a menu abroad, learning a language opens academic, professional and personal doors for you. It prepares you to access opportunities both inside and outside the country, and allows you to stand out in an increasingly competitive market.
What is the ideal age to start?
Although it is never too late to learn, studies show that the earlier you start, the more effective the acquisition of a new language will be. However, young people and adults can achieve fluency with practice and perseverance. The important thing is to maintain a positive attitude and be willing to learn continuously!
What do I need to learn another language?
To start with, it is suggested to:
- Keep an open mind
- Set clear goals
- Practice constantly
There are many free and accessible resources to get started today: mobile apps, conversation clubs, bilingual books and even virtual cultural exchanges.
Young voices in action
During Michigan 4-H Exploration Days 2025, several young people shared how they want to strengthen their multilingual skills to:
- Be better professionals in the area of health
- Communicate with diverse communities
- Research in other languages and from multiple perspectives
Their testimonials reflect the real and practical value of learning languages in daily life and in the professional future.
The benefits of being bilingual or multilingual are numerous. Here are some of them:
- Improved memory
- Increased ability to concentrate
- Intercultural skills
- Access to more job opportunities
- Expanding personal and professional networks. According to Michigan State University Extension, speaking other languages is directly linked to professional development and employability.
In other words, learning another language changes your life and your brain!
