The Innovative Governance of Large Urban Systems (IGLUS) hosted the Detroit-NYC module Sept. 4-15, 2017. Advanced students and early-stage career professionals in infrastructure fields gathered at the MSU Detroit Center on Woodward Ave. in Detroit to hear from three MSU School of Planning, Design and Construction (SPDC) faculty during a five-day seminar.
Professor Mark Wilson, PhD, MSU Urban & Regional Planning (URP) Program in SPDC, addressed the group on “Modern Transportation and Autonomous Vehicles,” while Rex LaMore, URP Senior Specialist and director of the MSU Center for Community and Economic Development, presented on “Domicology: Abandoned Property and Land Management.
Professor Mark Wyckoff, interim director of the MSU Land Policy Institute (an adjunct professor with URP) presented on “Planning & Regulating Vacant Land for Open Space & Green Development in Legacy Cities.” Most of his examples were from Detroit.
Students from around the world were eager to learn about how Detroit got into its present situation and what is being done to improve quality of life going forward.
The IGLUS is a nonprofit initiative of EPFL and selected partners, seeking to help cities better understand the strengths and weaknesses of the governance of their infrastructures with respect to the dimensions Efficiency, Sustainability and Resilience.
The IGLUS brings together practitioners (city managers, city officials, urban services providers, etc.) and academics from many different disciplines (amongst others, urban planners, architects, geographers, engineers, economists, management experts, and political scientists).
Their multidisciplinary approach focuses on infrastructures (technologies), institutions (rules), actors (organizations) and pervasive information and communication technologies (ICTs). Janice Beecher, PhD, director of the MSU Institute of Public Utilities, coordinates IGLUS activities at Michigan State.
