Joyce Hansen
VP, Johnson & Johnson Sterility Assurance
Joyce Hansen joined Johnson & Johnson as Vice President of J&J Sterility Assurance in 2012. Joyce is responsible for providing strategic vision, leadership and governance for sterility assurance E2E lifecycle management for sterile products (aseptically produced or terminally sterilized), and the microbial control for non-sterile products across Johnson & Johnson. Additionally, Joyce is responsible for Johnson & Johnson’s representation in U.S. and international sterile and aseptic standards settings and internal sterile process knowledge management activities including learning, standards, competencies, and best practices to Johnson & Johnson companies worldwide. Joyce is a member of the Johnson & Johnson Quality & Compliance Leadership Team.

Assistant Professor at Michigan State University
Yasser Aldhamen is a Ph.D. scientist with a strong background in gene therapy and translational research focusing on developing novel therapeutic platforms for cancer and infectious diseases. Aldhamen has a educational background in business and management from Eli Broad College of Business at Michigan State University. Aldhamen is the co-author of 20+ original research articles in leading, peer-reviewed, scientific journals in the areas of cancer immunotherapy, gene therapy, and immunology.

Jen Benolken
Western Region Medical Device and Pharmaceutical Manufacturer Specialist with DuPont Tyvek® Medical Packaging
Jennifer Benolken, CPPL, is the Western Region Medical Device and Pharmaceutical Manufacturer Specialist with DuPont Tyvek® Medical Packaging, working with downstream customers at medical device and pharmaceutical organizations, providing education and answering questions about Tyvek® packaging and sterilization. Jen has worked in the medical device community since 1991 in a variety of packaging related roles - packaging/labeling/sterilization engineer (in both operations and R&D roles), flexible packaging sales representative, and manager of packaging and labeling groups. While Jen earned her undergraduate degree in Manufacturing Systems Engineering at Kettering University (Flint, MI), she came to love packaging through her co-operative work experience at CPI/Guidant. Jen furthered her education by obtaining a Master of International Management degree from St. Thomas University (St. Paul, MN). She is currently the sub-committee chairperson for ASTM F02.50, Package Design and Development, as well as co-chair for AAMI’s ST/WG 7, Packaging Working Group, the US’s mirror group to ISO TC198/WG7. Jen is also an active member of the Institute of Packaging Professionals (IoPP) where she attained her lifetime Certified Packaging Professional (CPPL) certification in 2012; as part of IoPP, Jennifer is the Vice Chair on its Medical Device Packaging Technical Committee (MDPTC) board. Jennifer is currently working with industry leaders as the editor for the upcoming 3rd edition of the Medical Device Packaging Handbook.
Laura Bix
Assistant Dean for Teaching, Learning and Academic Analytics
Laura Bix supports fostering a culture that incorporates the use of learning analytics and interventions to help students success. She assists in defining what “student success” means within the CANR by using existing research, internal resources and external benchmarks to identify factors that can support teaching. Additionally, Bix collaborates with the Office of Institutional Studies to develop a tool capable of quantifying student recruitment, persistence and graduation rates. She looks forward to implementing proactive evaluations for teaching and learning across the college.
Patti Blessing
Vice President of Business Development
Patti Blessing is the Vice President of Business Development at Dayton, Ohio based CAVU Group. In her role, Ms. Blessing works closely with customers in the Life Sciences, Healthcare, Medical Device and Diagnostics industries to solve today’s rapidly changing thermal management and monitoring needs using advanced sensor technologies. Her primary focus is the enablement of business process improvement to protect high value assets in the supply chain. A graduate of Indiana University, Ms. Blessing has over 20 years of experience in leadership roles in supply chain operation and technology sales. She is current on the Board of AIM, supports local colleges in course development efforts and sits on the Advisory Boards of several start-up companies in Southwest Ohio.

With collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of clinicians, researchers, and engineers, Dr. Dong's research interest is using simulation and modeling technology to analyze healthcare delivery systems, design and test improvement interventions for patient safety and quality.
Ryan Erickson
VP, Packaging Engineering
Ryan Erickson completed his education at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan, where he earned a degree in Packaging Engineering. Following the completion of his degree, Ryan began his career with Cardinal Health in Chicago, Illinois. At Cardinal Health, Ryan served as a packaging engineer as he developed his skills in packaging validation and testing. Upon returning to Grand Rapids, Michigan, Ryan’s hometown, he accepted the position of Packaging Engineering Manager for Vention Medical, a large contract manufacturer for many large OEM’s in the medical device industry. In late 2014, Ryan co-founded Packaging Compliance Labs with partner Matthew Lapham. They formed PCL with the mission to help medical device and pharma clients, speed their products to market by breaking down the barriers that relate to packaging. As the Vice President, Packaging Engineer, Ryan serves as the technical expert on the team, guiding trainings, lean events and engaging in the medical device community as an opinion leader.
Eric Estrada
Master’s Student in Packaging at Michigan State University
Eric Estrada is currently a Master’s Student in Packaging at Michigan State University where his research is focused on creating a user centered approach for standardized medical device labeling with a focus on mitigating risk. His aim is to help close the gap of what is efficacious in label performance through objective evidence and analysis. Eric Estrada earned his bachelor’s degree in Packaging Systems and Design from Virginia Tech as well as a minor in Psychology. Eric currently works as a Manufacturing Engineer for Zimmer Biomet in Warsaw, IN.
Sonja Fritzsche

As Associate Dean in the College of Arts and Letters at Michigan State University, I work with the Dean to support Chairs and Program Directors in the area of innovative undergraduate curricular initiatives and personnel. Most significantly, the implementation of the Culture of Care initiative, evaluation procedures, College-wide administrator and faculty development initiatives, and creating habits of diversity, equity, and inclusion across the College. People first. From staff, to part-time lecturer, to student, to pre-tenure, to full professor and even those administrators.
Annette P. Hasbrook
Assistant Manager for Program Integration, Orion Program Office, NASA Associate Dean in the College of Arts and Letters at Michigan State University
Ms. Hasbrook is the Assistant Manager for Program Integration in the Orion Program. She is the Artemis-2 vehicle manager and she assists the program manager and deputy manager with management, integration and operations of the Orion Program, serves as the executive secretary of the Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle Control Board, and orchestrates external and independent program reviews.
Pete Hasbrook
Manager, International Space Station Program Science Office
Mr. Pete Hasbrook is the manager of the International Space Station Program’s Science Office at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. The ISS Program Science Office (PSO) works with scientific working groups to optimize the selection and execution of research on the ISS. This includes identifying opportunities, synergies, and issues, and communicating those to scientific and ISS Program leadership. PSO also communicates to the public about ISS Research via summary publications, web stories and social media, and in-person outreach such as today’s event.

Bill Heinrich, is the Head of Assessment and Experiential Learning at MSU’s Hub for Innovation in Learning and Technology where he works to enhance the value of experiential learning across the institution. Dr. Heinrich’s portfolio includes on-campus and international capacity development, focused on assessment skills and mindsets, program evaluation, experiential design, teaching, and learning, human centered design, and student learning. Bill’s research has a dual focus on organizational assessment practice and policy and adult and student experiential learning
Jiyon Lee
Doctoral candidate at Michigan State University School of Packaging
Jiyon Lee is a doctoral candidate at Michigan State University. The emphasis of her Ph.D. works is to see how context matters to users within a pre-hospital setting. She conducted a usability study in a purpose of investigating how paramedics interact with packaging under the worst-case scenarios (severe vibration and patient condition, etc.). Jiyon also has industry experiences in Korea as a packaging engineer, which she was responsible for packaging development for refrigerated food and supplements. Jiyon finished her internship at Edwards Lifesciences, which she was leading a usability study on the packaging of a heart valve and delivery system.
Lanqing Liu
Doctorate student at School of Packaging MSU
Lanqing Liu, is a doctorate student at School of Packaging MSU. He holds a master degree in Packaging Science and currently works with Dr. Laura Bix to explore various labeling strategies for enhancing medical compliance among patients. His research interests include information processing, human-package interaction, consumer behavior and applied technologies such as automation, change detection, eye-tracking and augmented reality. Lanqing also assists teaching in the core course-PKG411, which offers methods and technologies in packaging development for undergraduates.
Rod Patch
Senior Director, Package Engineering, JJV
Rod Patch is Senior Director, Package Engineering, Johnson & Johnson Vision. In his role, Rod serves the needs of J&J’s Vision Franchise with packaging strategies, innovation, programs, talent, regulations and supply chain improvements. Rod is responsible for both J&J Vision Care and J&J Surgical Vision within the J&J Vision Franchise. Rod is an accomplished leader with a broad base of experience in sterile barrier package design and labeling systems. He has a track record of implementing innovative packaging systems and packaging strategies that elevate the quality; compliance, and business value as well as improving the customer delight experiences for Johnson & Johnson products. Rod has supported packaging his entire career working in operations, supply chain, and R&D functions where he has led and managed teams supporting the package design, package process package delivery as well as Product Label designs.
Paula Perez
Senior Director, Package Engineering, JJV
Dr. Paula Perez completed her PhD in Packaging at Michigan State University in May 2018, focusing on research and development of the design of medical device packaging. There, she focused on creating and evaluating package opening features, peel forces and opening techniques that allow safe delivery of sterile devices, with the ultimate goal of reducing the incidence healthcare-acquired infections, where a patient becomes infected from exposure to microbes in the hospital. Her research work is aligned with the new usability requirements proposed by the ISO 11607 standard and EU MDR on medical packaging.
Dr. Perez has two bachelor’s degrees from the State University of New York at Farmingdale in Manufacturing Engineering and Facility Management Technology, as well as a master’s degree in Packaging Science from Rochester Institute of Technology. Dr. Perez currently works as a Project Packaging Engineer for BBraun Medical in the Dominican Republic, and has previous experience in the medical device, consumer packaged goods, and pharmaceutical industries.
Kimberly Patterson
MSN, RN, CHSE Simulation Operations Manager
Kimberly Patterson serves as the Simulation Manager for the Learning and Assessment Center. She is a Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator through the Society for Simulation in Healthcare. She is responsible for coordinating and developing curriculum for LAC events and teaching healthcare in addition to facilitating educational activities off-site for various healthcare professionals and institutions. She has worked at the center since 2010. She has also served as a clinical faculty member in the MSU College of Nursing and Coordinator of the Granger Simulation Lab. She completed her Master’s degree in Nursing Education and baccalaureate degree in Nursing from MSU. She is an AHA Basic Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, and Pediatric Life Support instructor and TeamSTEPPS Master Trainer. Her formal simulation and debriefing training was completed through the Center for Medical Simulation. Her clinical expertise includes 6 years in Medical-Surgical and Women’s Health.
Katie Ruger
Associate Dean, Admissions and Student Life at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine
For over ten years, Dr. Ruger has led data-informed recruitment, admissions and student program initiatives for Michigan State University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSUCOM) where she currently serve as the Associate Dean for Admissions and Student Life. During her tenure with MSUCOM, she has executed multiple change strategies to improve departmental efficiency, increase the enrollment of mission-fit candidates, and enhance the overall applicant experience. In order to best leverage her doctoral training in organizational leadership, she also teaches change management, organizational leadership, and business strategy courses for the DeVos Graduate School.
Jane Severin
VP, Technical Solutions at Network Partners
As Vice President of Technical Solutions, Jane brings a wealth of knowledge and a unique perspective to Network Partners. Jane started her distinguished career in medical device industry and has spent more than 25 years as a packaging professional. She’s served in several medical device and pharmaceutical roles with Baxter Healthcare, Bayer Corporation, Cardinal Health, Schering-Plough (Merck) Corporation, Oliver™ Healthcare Packaging, and DuPont Protection Solutions. Jane also founded two packaging consulting companies.
Mary Kay Smith
Director, Learning and Assessment Center and Assistant Professor MSU
Dr. Smith currently serves as the Director of the Learning and Assessment Center (LAC) and Assistant Professor. She holds a doctorate in Higher, Adult and Lifelong Education Administration. Dr. Smith is the current Chair of Accreditation for the International Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH), Accreditation Reviewer, Team Leader and member of the SSH Directors’ Committee and IPE Committee. She is also the Quality Assurance Chair for the American Heart Association Great Lakes Emergency Cardiovascular Care Committee, member of the Association for Standardized Patient Educators, SimGhost and Sigma Theta Tau International.
She has integrated multiple simulation methodologies into healthcare professional learning for 27 years including immersive clinical simulations, computer-assisted instruction, virtual reality, augmented reality and hybrid models. She has disseminated simulation knowledge at statewide, national and international workshops and conferences.
Dr. Smith has been active in higher adult and lifelong education for many years as an educator. Her clinical expertise includes 19 years in the Emergency Department, 3 years in ICU/CCU, 10 years in Clinical Education in combination with charge, supervision and management responsibilities in hospital settings
Sarah Shultz
Director of My Spartan Story in MSU’s Office of the Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education
Sarah Schultz serves as the Director of My Spartan Story, where she oversees Michigan State University’s new co-curricular record. In her role, Sarah works with the MSU community to help capture the out-of-class experience of undergraduate students through My Spartan Story, allowing students to discover opportunities, engage in Spartan experiences, and reflect on their learning. Sarah has dedicated her career to help students grow and transform through co-curricular experiences to positively shape their college experience and life beyond graduation.
