Oluwatoyin Motunrayo Adebowale

Oluwatoyin Adebowale studies Food Microbiology and Biotechnology, with a special interest in aflatoxins along the maize value chain in Nigeria. She has produced several research studies and a communication piece featured on Agrilinks in January 2018.
During her Semester at MSU, Adebowale visited the MSU toxicology lab to observe and participate in aflatoxin testing. This testing was done for aflatoxin presence and levels on several maize based cereal samples collected in Nigeria. Based on this lab and research experience, she developed a research program for identifying how to prevent the growth of aflatoxins in maize along the maize value chain in Nigeria.
While at MSU, Adebowale also researched how to develop and finance a sustainable agricultural extension service in Nigeria. This work involved a literature review alongside interviews with those involved with agricultural extension at MSU and in the State of Michigan. The goal was to learn how local governments and states in the USA collect and present information on agriculture and how they disseminate research findings to stakeholders.
Upon her return to Nigeria, Adebowale successfully defended her MSc. Thesis. She continues to engage in research on food safety issues along the maize value chain, both with faculty at MSU and her advisor in Nigeria. Adebowale (see success story #2) discussed her research findings on food safety issues in Nigeria with a team including Mr. Yakubu Gorah, Director of Planning Research and Statistics at Kaduna State Ministry of Agriculture.
This Project Scholar is making her research directly available and useful to the average Nigerian household. She developed a manual for safe production of a household cereal called “Properly Ferment and Prepare your Ogi / Koko / Akamu / Pap!”
