In the footsteps of a heroine: honoring Janice Lee Fenske

The fisheries profession lost an exemplary biologist on March 10, 2005, with the passing of Janice Lee Fenske after a courageous battle with cancer. Jan was one of the finest fisheries biologists ever employed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, known for her legendary work ethic and can-do attitude. Jan was a consummate fisheries professional, blending unwavering passion for fisheries with compassion for fisheries stakeholders, colleagues, and friends. The Janice Lee Fenske Excellence in Fisheries Management Fellowship (Fenske Fellowship) is a recruitment award offered through the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife at Michigan State University that provides financial support for deserving students to integrate fisheries management experiences into their graduate research programs. As a grateful recipient of the 2015-2016 Fenske Fellowship, I joined a group of 10 fisheries professionals who have received this award since 2007 and have honored Jan’s legacy by doing what she did best: conserve fisheries with uncommon zeal for biota, habitats, and human users.
