4-H Tech Wizards
Since its inception in 2015, the Mason County 4-H Tech Wizards program has become a textbook example of how to develop a STEM or STEAM centered 4-H program in a rural area. 4-H Tech Wizards centers around combating juvenile delinquency and school failure through providing planned group mentoring with a focus on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics). Working in teams of four with an adult or teen mentor, our Tech Wizards work on projects as simple as building with Legos and K'nex to building model rockets and solar-powered car kits to projects as advanced as learning to pilot drones, programming robots, and designing their own video games. Mason County 4-H Tech Wizards boasts over 100 individual projects designed to foster team work and develop skills necessary to succeeding in STEAM-related fields. Through providing training with these technologies and support through their group and mentor interactions, we encourage these youth to continue their STEAM-related pursuits long after leaving the program and bring their skills back to benefit their community.
Due to the advanced nature of the projects that are being worked on, 4-H participants must be 9 years of age (as of January 1st of the current school year) in order to take part in the program.
Participants 14 and older are encouraged to serve as Teen Mentors, helping younger participants with their projects and building relationships with their groups.
