AVMA Animal Welfare Assessment Contest
The 22nd annual American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Animal Welfare Assessment Contest (AWJAC) was hosted by North Carolina State University on Nov. 19th and 20th, 2022.
The 22nd annual American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Animal Welfare Assessment Contest (AWJAC) was hosted by North Carolina State University on Nov. 19th and 20th, 2022. There were 225 participants competing in four divisions: veterinary, graduate and undergraduate seniors and undergraduate juniors, representing 23 different universities. Students practiced their animal welfare assessment skills and were asked to present their findings to an expert panel of scientists and veterinarians with special expertise in animal welfare. Species covered in the 2022 contest scenarios included dairy-beef cattle, show chickens, octopus in aquariums, and companion animal shelters.
MSU was represented by a veterinary team and two undergraduate senior teams, totaling 14 MSU students. Both undergraduate teams were coached by Dr. Jackie Jacobs. Members of undergraduate teams included Sophie Bench, Jenna Volinski, Chloe Felske, Taylor Stehouwer, Ashley Gleeson, Jessica Smith, Katarina Jarmoluk, Stephanie Postmaa, and Sydney Ringwelski.
The MSU undergraduate senior teams placed 4th and 5th overall, with Jenna Volinski taking the 3rd place individual undergraduate placing.
