Cameron Webb on finding a major that gets him outdoors and keeps him on his feet

EmailCameron’s love of the outdoors sparked his interest pursuing a career in sustainable parks and tourism.
As an Eagle Scout and avid camper, Cameron Webb has spent many hours of his life outside. He has always loved outdoor recreation, so the Sustainable Parks, Recreation and Tourism (SPRT) major made perfect sense for him when he came to MSU. If you’re looking for a career that will keep you on your feet and away from an office, Cameron recommends majoring in SPRT!
Participating in a study away trip in Hawai’i was one of Cameron’s most exciting experiences at MSU. One day, he hopes to use the skills and knowledge he’s gained in SPRT to become a tour guide at a park in Hawai’i.
Cameron shares some words of advice for incoming and current CSUS students: “Don’t be afraid if you have not made a definite decision on what you want. As you get a better feel for what interests you, you can then select SPRT or another major that is most appropriate for what you want to achieve in life. There are many different opportunities for people in this major, so the choices are unlimited.”

Why did you choose the Sustainable Parks, Recreation, and Tourism major?
I chose SPRT because I enjoy the outdoors and spent most of my life in those types of activities. This included rising up the ranks in Boy Scouts to become an Eagle Scout, not to mention many camping and adventure trips. I also knew I would be able to have fun with this major to where I wouldn’t get stuck with just a desk job in the future. Given the variety of experiences, this career path appeared to be the best for me.
Who or what inspired your interest in sustainability?
The people who inspired my interest in sustainability were Dr. Chuck Nelson and Dr. Crystal Eustice. After talking to them multiple times and being in their classes, they showed me how awesome sustainability truly is! Also, studying about the environment challenges around coral reefs caused me to want to make a difference.
What has been one of your best experiences within your major so far?
Definitely, it has to be the mParks conference I was able to attend. It opened my eyes to how many different aspects go into parks and recreational opportunities. I also got to meet a lot of other students and professionals who had the same interests as me. A close second was the study away trip that I completed in Hawai’i. This was another fun, wonderful life experience.
What do you want others to know about the SPRT major?
This particular major isn’t well known at our university. It is pretty hidden, but in my eyes, it is one of the best majors because it is so useful in the real world. On a daily basis, people use parks and tourism. However, they think about the enjoyment it brings, but don’t consider this a real career. I have discovered that it is an excellent path to take for those interested in making the world and individual communities a better place. And, you can have plenty of excitement along the way.
What are your future plans?
My future plans are to become a tour guide for a Hawaiian park, such as Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park. Once I get this under my belt, I would work to climb up the management ranks and seek opportunities at some of the best national and amusement parks across the United States.
What’s your favorite thing about MSU?
Just the overall environment of MSU's campus, including the make-up of the student body and clubs. My favorite organization is definitely the Sustainable Parks and Recreation Club. The members were all very welcoming and helpful, which is reflective of how I have felt about my entire campus experience. My dad is an alumnus and has always said that he is a Spartan for life. Now, I second that endorsement!
