Providing undergrads opportunity to sample graduate life

Michigan State University was awarded a three-year grant from the National Science Foundation to continue its involvement with the NSF’s Research Experience for Undergraduates program. The MSU College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, in collaboration with the College of Natural Science, has administered the program since 2006. A 10-week program, REU gives undergraduate students at MSU interested in plant science a chance to immerse themselves in one of several participating research labs, providing a sample of graduate student life. Several of the researchers involved are funded, in part, by MSU AgBioResearch. Available topics of study include biology, chemistry, biotechnology, bioinformatics, biochemistry and computational sciences. MSU is one of more than 100 universities around the country to participate in the program.
- Through 2017, 174 undergraduates from MSU have participated in the NSF REU program.
- The new grant funds the program through summer 2020, which marks the 15th anniversary and 10th of MSU as an official NSF REU site.
- MSU is a leader in plant science research, with more than 100 faculty focusing on a variety of issues such as drought resistance, pest and disease mitigation, and more.
