Salmonella Declared an Adulterant

USDA's FSIS declared Salmonella an adulterant in raw breaded stuffed chicken products when they exceed a threshold of one colony forming unit per gram or higher.

The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced its final determination to declare Salmonella an adulterant in raw breaded stuffed chicken products when they exceed a threshold of one colony forming unit per gram or higher. Read the press release.

Salmonella can cause severe and debilitating illness and the infectious dose can be low. These products are disproportionately associated with Salmonella illness. Although breaded and stuffed chicken products represent less than 0.15 percent of the total chicken sold, the products are 33 times more likely to cause a Salmonella outbreak than other chicken products.
