The 8-year 0.1465-mill request that will appear on the August 7, 2018, ballot will provide continued funding for MSU Extension educational programs in Ogemaw County, such as:
- 4-H Youth Development
- Agriculture and Agribusiness
- Child and Family Development
- Health and Nutrition
- Master Gardener Volunteer Program
- Natural Resources
The property tax will cost the average Ogemaw County homeowner less than $7 a year.
Highlights of the many ways that Ogemaw County residents have benefited from MSU Extension programs in the past year follow.
4-H Youth Development
Annually, more than 900 Ogemaw County youth develop critical life skills in 4-H clubs and groups and in early childhood, after-school and school enrichment programs.
Community and Economic Development
Ogemaw County residents attend MSU Extension community and economic development programs on topics such as communicating through conflict, tourism and food systems.
Gardening
MSU Extension Ogemaw County staff hosted a sold-out Master Gardener course in fall 2017 that will produce additional trained gardening resource volunteers for county residents. Ogemaw County Master Gardeners volunteer more than 300 hours to support community-based garden projects.
Health and Nutrition
More than 3,000 residents have made strides toward healthier living through participating in programs on disease prevention and management, food safety, food preservation, nutrition and physical activity. Forty-eight children participated in the weekend food assistance backpack program, a partnership between MSU Extension and the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan.
Agriculture and Agribusiness
Ogemaw County farmers work with MSU Extension staff to develop management plans for their farms, crops, herds and finances to help grow Michigan’s economy, produce local food and protect the environment.
