Academic Interest

Leland Ackerson IV is an active researcher in Animal Breeding & Genetics, Livestock Genomics, and Bioinformatics, as a resident PhD Candidate in the Department of Animal Science at Michigan State University. Lee's work is primarily focused on developing genomic resources for the swine industry, including genome assembly and the production of a swine reference pangenome to capture breed-specific genomic variation and advance the precision of genetic evaluations. Additionally, his research extends into metagenomics, where he has developed tools (“AnimalARG Computational Workflow”(https://github.com/LeeAckersonIV/animalARG)) for the identification and global surveillance of antimicrobial resistance genes. Beyond his research, he has been active in the academic community, organizing seminars and guest lecturing on quantitative genetics in undergraduate and graduate-level courses.
