Background:

Chutong Chao is a PhD student at the Center for Systems Integration and Sustainability at Michigan State University, supervised by Professor Jianguo “Jack” Liu. He holds both bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Beijing Forestry University. His research focuses on coupled human and natural systems, with particular interest in how shocks and disturbances—such as tariff changes, armed conflicts, tsunamis, and extreme droughts—affect global biodiversity through telecoupling processes. Outside academia, he enjoys playing the bamboo flute, skiing, and watching Formula 1 races.
