Research

Dr. Coussens research is focused on two important pathogens of cattle, Mycobacterium paratuberculosis (MAP) and bovine leukemia virus (BLV).  MAP causes a fatal gastrointestinal infection in cattle and other ruminants.  BLV indices proliferation of B cells from the immune system and can lead to development of lymphomas.  Dr. Coussens’ research is directed at understanding the host response to these two pathogens and how each might cause disease.

Teaching

Dr. Coussens typically mentors 5 to 6 undergraduate research assistants each year and works with them to enhance their competitiveness in applications for medical, veterinary, or graduate school.  Dr. Coussens provides lectures in a section on influenza in MMG 813, Molecular Virology, offered through the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics.  Dr. Coussens also provides several guest lectures in the areas of animal health and immunology in various Animal Science courses.
