4-H Councils and Committees are advisory groups to the county 4-H program and staff. The county 4-H council and committees work with the MSU Extension staff to develop, implement and evaluate educational programs based upon the needs of the youth in the county. The partnership between 4-H members, adult volunteers and MSU Extension professionals is vital to the success of the 4-H program. 4-H Council has responsibility for contributing to the overall county 4-H program. Project specific committees have responsibility for programming related to their project area and should report their activity to the 4-H Council.

The 4-H community requires dedicated leadership in order for the local program to thrive. Taking on a leadership role is another way for you to Join the Revolution of Responsibility. Not only is serving on a committee a great leadership opportunity, it also helps you stay connected and informed. Every 4-H club in the county should strive to nominate it members and leaders to these leadership roles to ensure the future of 4-H is bright in Sanilac County.

Some of the responsibilities of Councils and Committees may include:

Promote and strengthen the county 4-H program and advise program development.
Provide a communication link between the county Extension office and 4-H clubs.
Advocate for the county 4-H program.
Develop and encourage leadership, decision-making, communication and teamwork in both youth and adults.
hold title to any property owned by the 4-H council.
Plan and conduct fund-raising activities necessary to carry out the work of the 4-H council.
Prepare a budget of funds to carry out planned 4-H activities.
Support education and leadership development for youth and adults.

4-H Council

The 4-H Council is an advisory board chosen to represent the 4-H leaders and members of Sanilac County. They work with MSU Extension staff to support, guide and promote the Sanilac County 4-H Youth Development Program. The 4-H Council’s functions include:

Assist in planning and development of county 4-H programs based on the needs of young people in the county and in carrying out the planned programs.
Evaluate the county 4-H program on a continuing basis.
Confer and cooperate with the MSU Extension staff and in partnership, raise and manage funds to support planned programs.
Sponsor county recognition for 4-H members and leaders.
Promote the objectives and philosophy of 4-H and serve in an advocacy role.
Represent the interests of the county program at other meetings and events.
Help organize new clubs and establish new projects.
Develop and maintain an active membership that believes their responsibility is to enhance and support the Sanilac County 4-H Program through Michigan State University Extension.

Council meetings usually occur on the third Thursday of every month at 7:00 p.m. at the Sanilac County MSU Extension Office or the Eatstand at the fairgrounds. They are open to every one! Horse Committee

Horse Committee meetings usually occur on the first Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. at the MSU Extension Office or fairgrounds and are open to anyone. For more information on the Horse Committee, please contact Julie Shubel, Horse Committee President, at 810-886-3108.

Large Animal Livestock Committee

The Large Animal Livestock Committee exists to support the youth enrolled in Sanilac County 4-H in the livestock project areas: beef, breeding beef, prospect beef, sheep and swine. The goals of the Large Livestock Animal Committee are:

Youth develop positive relationships with adults and peers.
Youth are physically and emotionally safe.
Youth are actively engaged in their own development.
Promote and provide educational opportunities in the large livestock project areas.
Establish policy, procedures and regulations for the livestock animal shows and exhibitions at county fair and other 4-H county shows.
Youth are considered participants rather than recipients in the learning process.
Youth recognize, understand and appreciate multiculturalism.
Youth grow and contribute as active citizens through service and leadership.

The Large Livestock Committee meets the fourth Thursday of September, October, January, March and July at 7:30 p.m. in Sandusky. Special meetings of the committee may be held on an order from the Chairman and MSU Extension staff, provided each voting committee member is notified at least 24 hours in advance of the meeting. Meetings may also be called by petition of five members to both the Chairman and 4-H staff. These meetings are open to anyone. Membership is open to any Sanilac County 4-H volunteer that has completed VSP.

Election process: A ballot election will be assembled for elected adult members at the first meeting following the fair. Anyone wishing to be placed on the ballot should contact the area superintendent or 4-H Program Coordinator by September.

Junior Livestock Committee

The Junior Livestock committee will be working behind the scenes building leadership, time management, marketing and team working skills to help further our Sanilac County 4-H program and further the knowledge of our youth. To be eligible to take part of this committee, you must be enrolled in the Sanilac County 4-H exhibitor program (yearly), be within the 4-H age of 13-19 years of age and be in one or more of the following project areas: beef, sheep, swine, breeding beef or livestock judging.
