Analytical Services
The Michigan State University (MSU) Dairy Lipid (Fatty Acid) Nutrition Program laboratory focuses on analyzing lipids across various matrices. Our laboratory can provide thorough analyses of fatty acids for a variety of sample types, whether it is for a single sample or several samples as part of a larger research project.
Routine analyses include:
- Fatty acid analysis (fatty acid content and concentration)
- Saturated fatty acids
- Monounsaturated fatty acids
- Polyunsaturated fatty acids
- Conjugated linoleic acids
- Trans-fatty acids
- Branched-chain fatty acids
- Milk and milk products
- Feedstuffs
- Rumen fluid and digesta
- Blood (plasma and plasma lipid fractions, erythrocytes and leukocytes)
- Tissues (liver, adipose tissue, etc.)
- Vegetable oils
- Animal fats
- Eggs
- Food items
Various analysis methods are used depending on the nature of the sample. Our laboratory is fully equipped for research into lipid and fatty acid metabolism and analysis. Separation of lipid fractions within samples is performed by thin-layer chromatography or solid-phase extraction methods. The instrumentation in our laboratory consists of two gas chromatographs (Shimadzu GC-2010 Plus) equipped with flame ionization detectors (GC-FID) for quantification of total fatty acid analysis (over 100 individual fatty acids). Depending on the sample type, both 30- and 100-meter fused silica capillary columns can be used in the GCs.
