Sarah Comstock is an Associate Professor in the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition at Michigan State University where her research group studies the impact of diet and cardiometabolic health during pregnancy on child growth and developmental outcomes. She earned a BS in Biochemistry from the University of Chicago and her PhD in Nutritional Biology from the University of California, Davis. During this seminar Dr. Comstock will give an overview of the work her research group is conducting in partial fulfillment of the requirements to earn tenure. The overarching goal of my research program is to determine which exposures build host-associated microbiomes that ensure appropriate child development. Exposures include diet, environmental chemicals, medications, infections, and soil. Outcomes of interest include growth, neurodevelopment, and atopic disease. We employ a longitudinal pregnancy, birth, and pediatric cohort study design. In this talk, I will describe exposures, with a focus on nutrition, contributing to the longitudinal development of the infancy and early childhood microbiomes as well as the impact of those exposures on child health outcomes.
