The Northern Hardwoods Resilience Project
Maple-dominated northern hardwood forests in eastern North America provide key ecological and economic services, but concerns about their regeneration have increased in recent decades. Across their range, many stands are understocked, dominated by undesired species, and at risk of losing resilience. Using data from multiple agencies and long-term studies, we assessed spatial patterns to identify where regeneration and diversity deficits are most pronounced, evaluate their implications, and assess opportunities to maintain northern hardwood forests.
