Mentoring and Career Development

Health Promotion and Engagement WorkLife Wellbeing

Health Promotion and Engagement WorkLife Wellbeing provides support for faculty navigating relocation, family care and work-life balance. It offers resources for dual-career support, childcare, eldercare and wellness. The office also helps faculty connect with peer networks and informal mentoring opportunities, which are especially valuable for those new to the Greater Lansing area.

Teaching Resources

The CANR Faculty & Staff Teaching Resources page includes instructional tools, course development support and links to university-wide teaching initiatives.

Research Resources

The MSU Office of Research and Innovation offers onboarding materials, internal and external funding opportunities and interdisciplinary collaboration platforms. Faculty can also manage their academic profiles and increase visibility through MSU Scholars.

Additional research resources include:

Extension Resources

CANR provides guidance and resources to support faculty with Extension appointments and responsibilities. The CANR Guidance and Support for Faculty with Extension Appointments and Responsibilities provides information on Extension expectations, programming, stakeholder engagement, evaluation, impact, and professional development. Faculty with Extension responsibilities are encouraged to use this guidance in discussions with their mentors, unit leaders, and Extension colleagues.

Foundation Relations Support

Greg Witbeck, CANR’s Director of Foundation Relations, connects faculty with non-federal foundation grant opportunities. He offers consultations to help align projects with potential funders, provides guidance for faculty new to foundation funding and introduces MSU’s tools for tracking opportunities.

Awards

Recognition of faculty achievement is an important part of the mentoring process. Mentees are encouraged to work with their mentors to identify opportunities for internal and external awards. These awards can enhance professional visibility, support promotion and contribute to a positive mentoring culture.

Award programs are listed on the Awards and Recognition page. Mentors may also serve as sponsors by writing nomination letters, facilitating networking and helping mentees gain visibility within the university and broader academic community.

Development Opportunities

MSU and CANR offer a variety of professional development programs to support faculty at all stages of their careers. These include workshops on promotion and tenure, leadership development and cohort-based initiatives.
