EmailThe Community Sustainability honors award winners for 2023 are those graduating students in CSUS who distinguished themselves in leadership, scholarship, and service.
The 2023 Community Sustainability Undergraduate Honors Award winners were celebrated in a ceremony on May 6th during the CSUS Pre-Commencement Celebration. These awardees are those students who have distinguished themselves in leadership, scholarship, and service during their undergraduate careers.
Awards are listed in alphabetical order by major (Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources Education; Environmental Studies and Sustainability; Sustainable Parks, Recreation, and Tourism).

Outstanding Senior Leadership Award in Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources Education
Recipient: Matthew Albrecht
About Matthew: Majored in Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources Education with a minor in Biology. Matthew will be completing his student-teaching this upcoming year at Fowlerville High School High School in preparation for her career goal of becoming and AFNR school-based educator in Michigan.
Outstanding Senior Scholarship Award in Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources Education
Recipient: Andrew Smith
About Andrew: Majored in Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources Education and Agribusiness Management while minoring in Environmental & Sustainability Studies and being a part of the Honors College. Andrew is an active member of the University while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. Upon graduation Andrew will be moving to Washington DC where is has accepted a position as a Regulatory Affairs Manager at the Aluminum Association. Andrew was also chosen as the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources Outstanding Student Leader Award Winner & Commencement Speaker.
Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources Education Service Award
Recipient: Nathan Snow
About Nathan: Majored in Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources Education with a teaching minor in Biology. Nathan will be completing his student-teaching this upcoming year at Perry High School in preparation for his career goal of becoming and AFNR school-based educator in Michigan.
Leadership in Environmental Studies and Sustainability Award
Recipient: Gianna Mendez German.
About Gianna: Majored in Environmental Studies and Sustainability and someone who has been extremely involved with various activities while here at MSU. Gianna has maintained a 3.92 GPA as a student. In addition to Gianna’s academic success, she was a part of RISE her freshman year and involved with the greenhouse team, as well as being involved with MRULE. She assisted with planning and social media content creation for a Bailey Scholars Study Abroad program in the Dominican Republic. During her Senior year she has been more involved with the Comunidad Latinoamericana where she is currently Vice-President, as well as being an Ambassador for the American Semester Program & Exchanges. She recently finished an internship with the NASA DEVELOP where they were assessing urban heat islands and bus stops in NYC. In the future she plans to gain more work experience around energy systems and climate justice and will be traveling to Costa Rica with the help of the Francis Kaneene scholarship.
Environmental Studies and Sustainability Scholarship Award
Recipient: Emily Juriga
About Emily: Majored in Environmental Studies and Sustainability along with a minor in Environmental Social Science all while maintaining a 3.99 GPA as a student at MSU. Emily has been involved with various volunteer projects, including several Red Cedar Clean ups and assisting the Lansing Community Garden with weeding and fall harvest, as well as being active in ESSU (Environmental Studies and Sustainability United). After graduation Emily plans to work with a disaster relief organization to address the increased need for assistance due to climate change.
Environmental Studies and Sustainability Service Award
Recipient: Edie Carney
About Edie: Edie is a member of the Honors College and has maintained a 3.95 GPA as an ESS major with an additional major in Sustainable Parks Recreation and Tourism. She has been involved with MSU Alpine Ski and Snowboard Team and Sierra Club, as well as Serving as Director of Community Engagement and Social Media for the Orphan Relief MSU group. Additionally, during 2022 Edie was a student research assistant under the supervision of Dr. Bessette. She has had two internships, one with Livingston Land Conservancy and the other at Atwell LLC, where she has learned about the professional world of environmental consulting and will be working post-graduation. In the future she would like to become involved with environmental research and continue to work with local communities on environmental and sustainability issues.
Sustainable Parks, Recreation and Tourism- Carl Dressel Park Management Award
Recipient: Savina Osann
About Savina: Majored in Sustainable Parks, Recreation, and Tourism with a minor in Conservation, Recreation and Environmental Enforcement. Savina completed her internship serving as the Vice President of the MSU Women’s Club Hockey team. Not only is Savina a division I player for the team, as VP and a leader on the executive board, she managed all team travel planning responsibilities and helped maintain a successful hockey program.
Sustainable Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Scholarship Award
Recipient: Dannielle Galang
About Dannielle: Majored in Sustainable Parks, Recreation and Tourism with a minor in Teaching English to Speakers of other Languages. Dannielle has maintained a 3.89 GPA through her academic career. Additionally, Dannielle is completing a professional internship as a Natural Areas Biodiversity Scholar here at MSU. Dannielle looks forward to a career traveling around the world to promote and advocate for sustainable practices, while also teaching English to speakers of other languages.
